RANDY MOMII ART
Acrylic on watercolor paper: 22 x 30
Komainu, sometimes referred to as lion dogs, are guardian statues that protect the entrances to shrines and temples by keeping evil at bay. Along with guardianship, they symbolize prosperity and success.
Until the late Edo period, most komainu were made of wood and kept undercover or indoors. When craftsmen began making the komainu from carved stone, they could withstand the elements and were displayed outside.
It is my intention to bring these komainu to life. To do this, I have used splashes of color and varying qualities of line.
